Ella Knight Q&A, ahead of her Pop Up Party gig in May on Binks Yard Terrace, Nottingham

Adam Perkins

Q1: Who are your biggest influences musically?

Masters at Work, without a doubt. Their ability to create music that feels both timeless and cutting-edge is unmatched. The way they blend soulful house, Latin influences, and jazz elements really resonates with my own style—I love fusing genres and bringing emotional depth to dance music.

Q2: Tell us about your ‘madame jazz’ events?

Madame Jazz started as a passion project, just a space to champion female jazz and soul artists but it’s grown into something much bigger. It’s a live music event that brings together some of the most exciting voices in jazz, soul, and beyond, giving them a platform to really shine. I’ve taken it to different venues and festivals, and every edition has had this incredible energy, whether it’s an intimate venue or a bigger space, it always feels like a proper community.

You also promote a club night in London called ‘house party’ what’s the vibe like? Music style and which guests have smashed it?

Ella Knight’s House Party is exactly what it sounds like a proper, no-frills, high-energy club night where the main rule is to just dance. It’s all about that intimate, packed-out, everyone’s-in-it-together kind of vibe, inspired by old-school house parties where the music never stops and the energy is through the roof. Musically, it’s a mix of everything I love, soulful house, 90s garage, deep grooves, and a bit of classic disco sprinkled in. It’s the kind of night where you’re going to hear proper feel-good tunes, big basslines, and a few unexpected selections that keep people on their toes. I’ve had some unreal guests come through, Todd Edwards, Wookie to name a few. It’s been amazing to see it grow so quickly, and I’ve got some big plans for what’s next!

Q3: You have played on the same bill as some massive DJ’s, Kerri Chandler for example, what’s been the highlight of your gigs in 2024?

2024 has been such a mad year, t’s hard to pick just one highlight! Playing alongside legends like Kerri Chandler has been unreal, but I think one of my standout moment was playing at The Glade at Glastobury b2b Jeremey Sylvester.

Q4: What’s your favourite 3 Clubs you’ve played at?

The Cause, Village Underground, Drumsheds.

Q5: Will you be playing in Ibiza this summer?

I hope so, I’m speaking it into extestiance.

Q6: What’s your opinion on phones in clubs ?

It’s a tricky one. On the one hand, I totally get why people want to capture moment, when you're having an amazing time, you want to remember it. But at the same time, there’s something about phones that can kill the energy in a club. When you’re playing a set and look up to see a sea of screens instead of people fully in the moment, it definitely changes the vibe. DJing is all about connection the exchange of energy between the DJ and the crowd. If people are too focused on filming, it takes away from that.
